Abstract

"The Outdoor Issue." The archetypal Maine vacation image of a couple serenely paddling a canoe has been largely replaced by that same couple skimming the surface of the water in their own sleek, fast kayak. While retailers are, overall, happy with enormous growth over the last decade, this year outfitters have suffered from poor weather and a poor economy. Overseers of natural areas like the Maine Island Trails Association are becoming concerned with the popularity and ease of use of kayaks. Details.
