Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Maine's high business tax burden, which was documented in a study released last month by Ernst & Young for the Council on State Taxation. The authors concluded that the business share of state and local taxes in Maine is 46.3 percent, 3.7 percent higher than the national average. But Christopher St. John, executive director of the Augusta-based Maine Center for Economic Policy, questions the methodology of the study, noting that the property tax numbers in the survey seem high.
