Abstract

Merry Lynch, owner of the Papier Gourmet stationery store in Portland, and her husband, Zdislaw Pavlak, a native of Poland, have opened a store in Lodz, Poland, and are collaborating with a London designer to open a store in London this summer. She describes the difficulties of opening the store in Poland, the business's rapid growth, and the advantages of breaking into the European Union market. Pavlak, who has a diplomatic background, will spend the next year in Europe, helping to get both stores off the ground and bridging the different cultural mindsets involved in running them.
