Abstract

North End Composites, of Rockland. has been in the boatbuilding business for 25 years, but for most of its history it has built hull molds and custom parts for other boatmakers. With the consolidation of the industry, however, many of North End's customers are now able to provide for themselves many of the services and products North End use to provide. Consequently, North End and Sabre Yachts, which are both owned by the same group of shareholders, decided last year, however, to combine North End's technical skills with Sabre's manufacturing, distribution and marketing skills to create a new line of power boats called Back Cove Yachts, built entirely by North End Composites. The 29-foot boats will cost between $155,000 and $190,000, and North End sees the boat as accounting for 80 percent of revenues by 2007, up from an estimated 25 percent this year. The company plans to expand Back Cove's line to include two more models and has added 10 new jobs, bringing total employment to 95, and has shifted many of its workers and floorspace over from traditional mold-making to Back Cove Yacht production.
