Abstract
"Next" piece on 12 Mainers shaping the future of the state's economy, with a profile of Kristin Majeska, 36, president of Common Good Ventures (CGV), a program of the Maine Community Foundation, in Waterville. The three-year-old philanthropic organization is working to encourage "social enterprise," or ventures by nonprofits that both accomplish its mission and generate enough income to make the organization financially self-sustaining. After consulting with CGV, Wolfe's Neck Farm in Freeport shifted from selling only its own beef to becoming a distributor for other farmers raising cattle naturally. Now other farmers are ensured a premium price for their beef, and Wolfe's Neck Farm has had about $4 million in sales this year.
