Abstract
"Business Maine: Central & Western" piece reporting that Archie W. "Bill" Berry, a former University of Maine professor of geology, Farmington resident and longtime Saddleback skier, recently joined with eight of his family members to purchase entire 8,000 acre Saddleback Ski Area property, that includes the 41-trail, 4,120-foot mountain. Berry refused to reveal the sale price, but previous owner David Breen had dropped the asking price from $12 million to $8 million. Berry hopes to open this year and begin upgrades. Berry hopes that improvements to the mountain and a new advertising campaign will bring skiers back to the mountain. Saddleback's annual skier visits dropped from 45,000 in the 1980s to about 15,000 last year. Berry believes he has to increase skier visits back to the 45,000 figure in order to break even. Work has already started on clearing brush and trees from trails that haven't been cleared in years and new snow-making and grooming equipment has been ordered for the coming season.
