Abstract

"Building & real estate" special section piece on how construction businesses are dealing with building supply costs that spiked sharply this summer. There was a 112 percent increase in the price of plywood alone. Increased demand by customers wanting to lock in low mortgage rates, western forest fires, southern floods, the war in Iraq, and increased fuel costs all contributed to the increase. The increase in prices might be an overdue correction now that the Canadian dollar is stronger and the cost of imports has risen. Some contractors are having to absorb the increased costs. With a list of some building materials and their prices in May and Sept.
