Abstract

"Building & real estate" piece on the lack of regulation in Maine's home building and remodeling industry. Complaints about building contractors filed with the Attorney General's Office are second only to motor vehicle complaints. The office is proposing new legislation that would require builders and remodelers to be licensed, insured, and that their work meet a statewide building code. It would not require towns to hire a building inspector. Maine is one of 19 states without some sort of minimal code for single family houses. The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Maine supports a licensing requirement and a statewide building code. With details on the proposed "Maine Home Contractor Licensing Act."
