Abstract

"Building & real estate" special section piece on Mike Ouellet of Brunswick-based Ouellet Associates, which is overseeing the construction of the Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory in Portland. The marine organization has a three-part mission: to work with the local fishing community on fishery management issues; to study the ecosystem of the Gulf of Maine; and to educate the public about marine science. President Don Perkins says the goal is to create a center of national significance for marine research. Ouelett's firm has built marine science facilities before, but not on the scale of this $10 million job, which will keep 40-60 construction workers busy for the next 15 months. With details on funding for the project, the building's design and its Commercial Street site, and technicalities of the challenging project, which include the need for a rigid structure so that vibrations will not throw off finely calibrated lab work.
