Abstract

"Focus on Marketing" piece on small retail businesses that act as their own pitchman in TV ads. Daric Ebert, owner of Portland Appliance, has gained recognition as "Appliance Man" in ads for his store. Ron Gobeil, of Gobeil's Furniture Galleries in Gray, along with his two children, are spokespersons for his ads on cable channels. Dick Aronson, of Portland-based Century Tire, makes ads that feature him and his employees. Some in the advertising industry question whether amateur ads are the best use of advertising funds, but these companies are pleased with their results.
