Abstract
"Focus on Marketing" piece by Bob Cott, president of CD&M Communications in Portland, on how too great an emphasis on political correctness and inclusivity can have a dampening effect on advertising. Maine's successful statewide weight-loss competition, "The Maine Games," came under attack for placing the slogan "I'm a Big Fat Loser" on T-shirts, because it was insensitive to overweight people. A vocal minority can shut down an ad campaign. Several years ago, an ad was pulled because someone objected to seeing bread--"the sacred manna of life"--being ejected from a toaster.
