Abstract

Several recent acquisitions of smaller dealers by Maine heating oil dealers suggest that the heating oil business could be following the path of other industries, in which a few big players take most of the business and threaten the survival of smaller dealers. The Attorney General Office's annual report on the industry warns that competition is low in some--mostly rural--areas, but that the home heating oil business has stability and there is no cause for alarm. There is also not a great price discrepancy between the oil prices of large and small companies, because oil is very competitively priced. In 20 years, the number of home heating oil businesses in Maine has gone from 300 to 240, not a fast rate of decline.
