Abstract

An interview with and profile of Thomas Watjen, the new president and CEO of UnumProvident Corp. succeeding J. Harold Chandler, who was fired amid class-action lawsuits over the mishandling of claims and a stock price that dropped precipitously. Watjen was COO of the company, which was formed from a merger of Portland-based Unum Corp. and Tennessee-based Provident Cos. in 1999. He speaks of how the company was unprepared for a "perfect storm" of economic destabilizers and how he is now working to strengthen the company financially, communicate better with employees, increase efficiencies, and raise the stock price.
