Abstract

Larry Warren is president of the Western Mountains Foundation, a group that has been trying to build a 180-mile recreation trail and 12 back-country lodges in western Maine, an $8 million initiative called Maine Huts and Trails. Aspects of the proposal have generated objections from the Friends of Bigelow (Preserve). Warren agreed to try to negotiate a route around the preserve on tribal land, and if that failed, the friends group agreed to allow a groomed trail through Bigelow Preserve. After a year, Penobscot Nation approval is uncertain and Warren wants to revisit the preserve route. Meanwhile, he has raised $250,00 from L.L. Bean, matched by an anonymous donor, and is trying to raise $1.5 million more for phase one. Details.
