Abstract

Rusty Foster of Peaks Island has developed an open-source software program for blogs (short for weblogs) called Scoop. The software, which powers numerous influential political blogs, allows visitors to a website to become the producers of the site by posting comments, diaries, etc. Scoop is making a difference in the national political debate, according to Dan Gillmor, a columnist for SiliconValley.com. Although Scoop isn't earning any money directly, Foster earns income through customization of the program. In February, Foster joined forces with Markos Moulitsas and Jerome Armstrong to form a political consulting group, Armstrong Zuniga LLC. With Scoop as the engine behind the effort, the three are consulting with politicians and nonprofits to do grassroots organizing on the Internet.
