    Abstract

"Focus on Banking and Finance" piece on results of a recent survey by "American Banker" magazine and Gallup. While usage of online bill paying is up, consumer confidence in the industry and consumer satisfaction are down sharply. Chris Pinkham, president of the Maine Association of Community Banks, responds to the survey's findings. He addresses the impact of corporate scandals on consumer confidence and says that some of the consumer dissatisfaction with their primary financial institution was caused by the bottleneck of people refinancing their mortgages at low interest rates. Debit card use is increasing and electronic bill paying is up, especially among younger people, those over 65, and those with higher incomes.
