Abstract

"e-ME" piece on Peaks Island idealist Rusty Foster, who shepherds the online community Kuro5hin (www.kuro5hin.org). The name "corrosion" refers to "Rusty." Foster is creating Collaborative Media Foundation (CMF), a nonprofit that includes Kuro5hin (K5), and, he hopes, other inclusive online communities where users are in control. On Kuro5hin, users vote on the stories that some of them post. Stories are about technology and culture and where those things intersect. At a financial crossroads, he staged a five-day net-a-thon and raised $42,000.
