Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Gov. John Baldacci's plan to do more to spur Maine's creative economy, such as focusing on tourism as part of the creative economy and perhaps using tourism promotion funds to advertise such events as the folk festival planned by Bangor. The research used by the state includes about 9 percent of the workforce in the "creative class." According to Richard Florida, who coined the term "creative economy," the term also encompasses teachers, gays, and mixed-race couples. He developed a "creativity index" as a measure of economic vitality, which looks at technology, talent, and tolerance. Portland ranked third in the country among regions of less than 250,000 people. Among all the regions, it ranked 36th, based on 2000 data.
