Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the high cost of alcohol and drug abuse in Maine, estimated at $618 million by one recent study. Lawmakers like Sen. Michael Brennan (D-Portland), are questioning whether that report underestimated the economic impact of substance abuse, and are criticizing the Office of Substance Abuse for not recommending solutions. Kim Johnson, director of the Office of Substance Abuse, defended the study, saying it was not intended to come up with recommendations. In other news, there is an increase in the number of Maine consumers complaining about high-tech scams that convince victims to reveal key identification information. The 2004 Maine Innovation Index shows that Maine's investments in research and development have increased 30-fold in the last decade.
