Abstract

"Economy Watch" piece reporting that Maine's median household income dropped by almost $4,000 between the periods 1999-2000 and 2002-2003, according to newly released data from the Current Population Survey of the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Maine's median household income averaged $37,619 between 2000 and 2003. Recent census data also show that 10.9 percent of Mainers had no health insurance in 2003, compared to a national average of 15.4 percent. Laura Fortman, Maine labor commissioner, reported that Maine women earn 76 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts, compared to a national average of 78 cents. Fortman noted that pay equity progress has slowed in recent years.
