Abstract

"Building & real estate" special section piece on Portland-based Barnstormers, started by John Rousseau, 31, who now turns antique lumber into modern flooring. He began Barnstormers in 1994 to dismantle and move antique barns, a business with a small market and no guaranteed profit. His supply of flooring barely keeps up with demand, and his profits this year are on pace to double to about $460,000. The best bang for his buck has been salvaging wood from old industrial buildings. He says his efforts to achieve consistency is what keeps customers coming back.
