Abstract
"Focus on Greater Bangor" piece on the Maine Highlands Guild in Dover-Foxcroft, a nonprofit economic and community development organization founded two years ago to promote the arts, artisans, the creative economy, and the cultural heritage of the Penobscot and Piscataquis counties. The guild's services include showing members' wares at gift shows across the country, offering small business workshops, and providing a sense of community. Baby bonnet knitters Joan Perkins and Cathy Oliver of Angel Kisses in the Lincoln area say the guild has been a marketing godsend. Maine Highlands executive director Tracy Michaud Stutzman is able to use her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology while encouraging micro businesses. With details on the creation and growth of the guild, its successes, and its funding.
