Abstract

"Focus on Banking & Finance" piece on Maine banks, which are the most profitable in New England, with all but seven out of the state's 39 banks increasing profits in 2002, many to record levels. The loan volume generated by low interest rates and Maine's relative stability in the midst of a recession helped the banks. With statistics on all Maine banks for 2002, market-share gains for Maine's community banks, and some figures for the New England banking industry.
