Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a study released by California-based Milken Institute, ranking Maine 27th among 50 states in its potential for the biopharmaceutical industry. The state, which was last in research and development investments a decade ago, has increased investment in the biotech sector and formed the Maine Biotech Coalition. Maine finished second in relative growth of total biotech venture capital invested from 2001 to 2003 and ranked 17th in the Human Capital and Workforce Composite Index. Maine came in last in attracting funding from the National Institutes of Health.
