Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece on P. D. Merrill, 60, the second-generation head of the transportation business that is now Merrill Marine Terminal in Portland. Recently Merrill sold the company's operating assets to N.H.-based Sprague Energy, which operates a petroleum transfer facility in South Portland. Merrill says the operation needs to add another warehouse, at a cost of about $3 million. When potential state funding for the warehouse fell through, Merrill decided to find a bigger company that could make the investment. Merrill's goal is the same as his father's--to preserve commerce as an intregal part of Portland's waterfront. He hopes the transaction won't change much about the operation.
