Abstract
"Commentary" piece by Stacy Mitchell, senior researcher at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in Portland, on the importance of supporting local businesses over national chains. At stake are job creation, the return of more tax dollars to the community because small businesses require fewer services, quality of life, and community. Methods to support local businesses include mandating appropriate sizes for big box stores, establishing impact standards for retail development, revitalizing downtowns, encouraging mixed uses, creating spaces for entrepreneurs, starting revolving loan funds and buying cooperatives, launching "local first" campaigns, and starting loyalty card programs.
