Abstract

"Focus on Banking and Finance" piece on how credit unions, which are non-profit and tax-exempt, are coming into more direct competition with banks. Federal rule changes in the 1990s allowed credit unions to begin overlapping memberships in order to survive. Unions have grown larger and now market to less clear-cut constituencies. Recently eight Maine credit unions moved to offer shared branching. Currently, banking advocates are less interested in imposing state income taxes on Maine credit unions than in imposing the state sales tax. With comparisons of bank and credit union rates and assets.
