Abstract

"Perspectives" piece by Wade Merritt, director of the Maine International Trade Center Canada Desk in Bangor, on the new Calais-St. Stephen bridge between Maine and New Brunswick. The bridge will have FAST lanes for expedited customs clearance and will support the flow of trade that increased with the introduction of Canadian-American free trade in 1989. Eastern Maine and southern New Brunswick have been seeking to take advantage of an emerging regional economy by creating new ties between their communities. The bridge is a symbol of a historic trade connection that was dormant for years because of high tariffs.
