Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Maine's economic development commissioner Jack Cashman, who says that despite the state's tight budget, there are programs to help entrepreneurs, including the Small Business Development Centers program and the Maine Micro Enterprise initiative. Sen. Lynn Bromley (D-South Portland), co-chair of the Legislature's Business, Research and Economic Development Committee, wants to redirect more than $7 million a year from the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement program toward expanding existing programs and adding new ones, such as a women's business center and a small-business ombudsman's office. She says more programs are needed.
