Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Maine's changing workforce demographics, with comments by John Dorrer of the Maine Department of Labor. Dorrer said Maine's economy and workforce is changing "like a speeding freight train," and that both state government and businesses need to adapt. It is uncertain if a supply of younger workers will be available to replace older workers as they leave the workforce. In addition, data shows that a four-year college degree no longer means that a worker can expect to be paid a premium over his or her career. According to Dorrer, it now takes a post-graduate degree to reach that level of assurance.
