Abstract

"Focus on Banking & Finance" piece on how passage of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 would affect Maine's businesses and consumers. Provisions of the measure include a means test for filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and mandatory credit counseling for all consumer debtors before they file their bankruptcy petitions. Maine senator Susan Collins has championed the permanent enactment of the temporary Chapter 12 bankruptcy provision, which protects fisherman and farmers.
