Abstract

"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece with an interview with architect Kevin Whitney, of Auburn-based Harriman Associates, and builder Pat Richter, of Portland-based Wright-Ryan Construction. Their expansion of the University of Southern Maine's John Mitchell Center in Gorham is one of the first buildings in Maine to meet national environmental design standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. They discuss building the expansion, its cost, LEED certification, features they incorporated into the design, and the challenge of finding cost-effective green options.
