Abstract
"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece with a telephone interview with Bill Ginn of Pownal, director of the Nature Conservancy's Forest Conservation Program and former executive director of Maine Audubon. He has written a new book, "Investing in Nature: Case Studies of Land Conservation in Collaboration with Business." He speaks of his company, Resource Conservation Services, which brings waste products to farmers for fertilizer; the need for conservationists to work with business and to hire people with financial skills; examples of "natural capital;" the Nature Conservancy's aid of bankrupt Great Northern Paper Co. in Millinocket; working with private investors who will grow trees on land rather than develop it; how the conservancy manages land; the current quick turnover of timberlands; carbon offset programs; and the role of activist groups in conservation.
