Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on legislation before Congress that would preempt many state laws and regulations dealing with lending by banks and financial services. One bill is called the Responsible Lending Act, and the other is the Predatory Lending Act, which is meant to protect consumers from predatory lending practices. Members of Maine's congressional delegation say that regulation at the state level has been more effective and responsive than at the federal level.
