Abstract

Article on the New Balance manufacturing plant in Norridgewock, with a focus on the plant's lean manufacturing techniques. Lean manufacturing aims to minimize waste of both materials and labor. Last year, Jeff Williams, a divisional manager, reduced the facility's manufacturing space from 80,000 sq. ft. to about 40,000 sq. ft. Jim Davis, chairman and CEO, expects each of the company's four other U.S.-based factories to adopt the same practices. New Balance is the only athletic shoemaker still producing some of its inventory in the United States. Davis hopes the success of lean manufacturing will allow the company to bring even more shoes onshore from China to the United States.
