Abstract
"Focus on the Midcoast" piece on Thomaston-based Dragon Products Company, which has launched a $50-million upgrade, apparently without securing the necessary building permit, although that issue was resolved. Dragon is the town's largest taxpayer, and most residents support the plan because of hoped-for economic benefits. Voters approved a tax increment financing proposal that will return 45 percent of taxes on the project to the company. Converting from wet to dry cement manufacturing will allow the plant to increase production without increasing emissions. The company has won several environmental awards, but was named one of Maine's "Dirty Dozen" by the Boston-based Toxics Action Center.
