Abstract
"Focus: Downeast Region" piece on Maine Halibut Farms LLC, a Franklin-based company that hopes to break into the land-based farmed halibut industry. For years, companies have been trying to breed and farm the fish, with minimal commercial success. Alan Spear and Douglas Morrell, co-owners of Maine Halibut Farms, are convinced they can profitably distribute land-based farmed halibut. The key to their plan is work done by Nick Brown at the University of Maine's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin. With a related article detailing other projects at the University of Maine's CCAR.
