Abstract
The number of Maine farms is declining, but the number of women running farms increased 35 percent from 1997 to 2002. Gloria Varney, co-owner of Nezinscot Farm in Turner, and Vivianne Holmes, who runs the Maine chapter of the Women's Agricultural Network, held a second experiential on-farm weekend for women, offering workshops in practical skills. Attendees included a woman who recently bought a farm in New Sweden with her husband and a student at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, who says her desire to farm is unique among her peers. With details on the increased demand for organic dairy products, which Nezinscot Farm supplies.
