Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece on a bill introduced by Rep. Deborah Pelletier-Simpson, D-Auburn, that would require automobile dealers to disclose to customers when a vehicle has a "black box" data recorder of some sort. The law would also prohibit the downloading of data from a car's recorder without the owner's permission or a court order. The proposal had bipartisan support on the Legislature's Transportation Committee last spring. Insurers fear the law will limit their access to the data, which they argue will make settling claims and reducing fraud more difficult.
