Abstract

Article on the death-care industry in Maine, noting that the increasing popularity of cremation is changing the face of the state's funeral home industry. Morrell York, owner of York's Funeral Chapel in Cornish, founded Independent Death Care of Maine after seeing demand for alternatives to traditional funerals. York said that a direct cremation costs around $1,000, compared with the average traditional funeral cost of about $6,500. Auburn-based Funeral Alternatives founder Chuck Kincer agrees that cremation has become particularly popular, adding that there's a good possibility that this year the cremation rate in Maine will come to over 50 percent. Kincer notes that in Maine, cremation is mostly an affordability issue. Personalization and pre-planning, two other trends in the funeral business, can also be partially attributed to cremation.
