Abstract
Maine has one of the lowest rates of hospice usage in the country, but a growing industry is working to educate Mainers about end-of-life options, including hospice care. Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice (AHCH) in Auburn this fall opened its new, $3.7 million Hospice House facility, featuring private patient rooms as well as separate areas for family members to stay the night. Andrea LeBlanc, hospice program director at AHCH, hopes the new facility will make hospice care more visible. Portland-based Hospice of Southern Maine recently announced plans to build its own freestanding facility in Scarborough. With comments by Jody Deegan, CEO of Hospice of Southern Maine; and Barbara Shaw, chair of the board of directors at Hospice of Maine.
