Abstract

"Focus on Safety and Security" piece on how the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is creating voluntary alliances in an attempt to move from being a potential adversary to a partner. In Maine, OSHA has partnered with labor unions, health care workers and hospitals, construction sites, and private businesses like Marden's. Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston realized a savings of $800,000 on worker's compensation rates through its participation in the OSHA program. There are currently 10 active alliances in Maine, handled by Bill Coffin, OSHA's first compliance assistant specialist.
