Abstract

In the 18 months since the merger of its two competitors, Mercy Hospital has grown to nearly full capacity. Mercy president Howard Buckley had opposed the merger, believing that competition was the only way to guarantee quality service. Maine Medical Center president Don McDowell points out that the merger allowed Maine Medical and Brighton Medical to consolidate completely and serve patients with fewer employees and at lower cost.
