Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on the recent uproar over the proposed targeted development of private timberland owned by Plum Creek in the Moosehead region, noting that the project offers many benefits. The development would include new residential housing, as well as commercial and industrial projects to help the local economy. Luke Muzzy, plan asset manager for Plum Creek, said the plan would protect 417,000 acres of forestland, while developing less than 9,000 acres, or two percent. Charles Colgan, an economist at the University of Southern Maine, estimates that the economic benefits of the Plum Creek plan could support 800 new jobs totaling $41.5 million in personal income.
