Abstract
Dr. Steven Katz, medical director at Jackson Brook Institute, comments on Governor Angus King's task force report on mental health. Dr. Katz commends the recommendation for smaller facilities to treat the seriously mentally ill, which will replace the larger facilities to be closed. The overhead cost of large state-run facilities has become prohibitive nationwide, and Dr. Katz argues for privatized, community-based centers to serve a population that is becoming sicker and more difficult to treat. Includes a table of 20 state obligations in caring for the mentally ill.
