Abstract

The arrival of the Queen Elizabeth 2 in Portland Harbor was the culmination of efforts to make Portland and the Maine coast a cruise ship destination. Thirty- to forty-thousand people came to Portland for the QE2 festivities. Twenty-six cruise ships came to Portland in 1996, twice as many as the year before. Although the Prince of Fundy began its runs to Nova Scotia in 1970, it was not until 1995 that cruise ships began to have a major effect on the Portland economy.
