Abstract

"Business Leader of the Year" piece on Stan Bennett, third-generation owner of the 85-year-old Oakhurst Dairy in Portland. Despite consolidation pressures, fierce competition, and low margins, he has upgraded his Forest Avenue facility and expanded his northern New England market, maintaining a commitment to quality, family farms, the community, and the environment. Oakhurst is the 85th largest U.S. dairy, with $95 million in sales in 2004. In a good year the company turns about a three percent profit. Bennett's meticulous quality control and connection to "the natural goodness of Maine," has kept the dairy competitive, though not without struggle. The company donates 10 percent of profits to groups serving children and the environment. With a short history of the company.
