Abstract

"Focus: Technology" piece on the potential for Maine's biotech sector, and how the state can make it a significant part of the economy. Maine currently has about 80 biotech companies, including Westbrook-based Idexx Laboratories, The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, and Portland-based ImmuCell. Janet Yancey-Wrona, director of Maine's Office of Innovation, believes the outlook for biotech in the state is positive, though stronger connections must be made between industry and research. Other hurdles for the industry include a lack of scientific degree programs and recruitment challenges. With comments by Charles Colgan, a public policy professor at the Muskie School of Public Service; and Nelle Hanig, a business development representative with Portland's Economic Development Division.
