Abstract
"Focus on Northern Maine" piece on Pineland Farms Natural Meats feedlot, a former experimental potato composting facility near Fort Fairfield, which when completed, will be the largest feedlot east of Ohio. There, Pineland Farms plans to handle 5,000-7,000 head of cattle, half its yearly total, says Erick Jensen, the company's president. This is one of Pineland's first moves to vertical integration, and it is hoped the feedlot will invigorate the local agriculture business as well as expand production of the company's Wolfe's Neck Farm Natural Beef brand. Fort Fairfield has rehabilitated railroad track that can carry grain to Pineland's cattle and produce from local farmers. The cattle will have to be trucked to Philadelphia to be slaughtered.
