Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on the aging of Maine's construction workers, whose average age is 47. The Maine Department of Labor projects that more than 2,000 carpenters alone will be needed in the next six years, in a state where the average age is 46.9. Jeff Ohler, president of Associated Contractors of Maine, recommends more and better training programs in the state's community colleges. The Maine Construction Careers Alliance produced an award-winning public awareness campaign designed to attract young people to the trades.
